College of Chemistry and Environmental Science

    College of Chemistry and Environmental Science is one of the key colleges of Henan Normal University, develops from the Chemistry Departments of Henan University (founded in 1923) and Pingyuan Teachers College (founded in 1950). In 1956, the above two departments were incorporated into Department of Chemistry of Xinxiang Teachers College, which was renamed Department of Chemistry of Henan Normal University. In the 1980s, basing on the Chemistry speciality, Environmental Engineering, and Chemical Engineering and Technology specialties were established in succession. In 1998, College of Chemistry and Environmental Science was founded. Now the college has three departments: Chemistry Department, Chemical Engineering Department and Environmental Science and Engineering Department. There are 7 Master’s degrees on offer (Physical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Environmental Science, Applied Chemistry and Disciplinary Teaching Theory on Chemistry), among which, Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Environmental Science are the key subjects in Henan Province, and Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry and Applied Chemistry are the key subjects of the university. In addition, there is Environmental Key Laboratory of Higher Education in Henan Province.
The college has 102 teaching and administrative staff, among whom, 22 are professors, 29 are associate professors, 1 is excellent expert directly under the sponsorship of the state government, 6 are experts directly under the sponsorship of the provincial government, 6 experts enjoy special allowance given by the state government, 3 are model workers in the field of national education, 1 is director of Chemical Society of China and 3 are directors or committee members of the state second-level society.
The college boasts favorable conditions for teaching and scientific research. In the chemistry building which has 11,000 square meters of floor space, there are over 150 laboratories and scientific research sections, equipped with complete instruments, among which over 100 are large-scale precise instruments such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, FL-IR spectrometer, Gc-Ms, ion Chromatography etc. The reference rooms house more than 30,000 books and 340 sorts of periodicals both at home and abroad.
The college pays much attention to teaching quality and launches the teaching innovation actively. Since 1995, the college has undertaken 15 teaching innovation projects at or above the provincial level and gained 6 province-level prizes for better teaching results. Four basic courses, namely, physical chemistry, analytical chemistry, organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry were awarded provincial excellent courses. About half of the graduating students are enrolled as Master’s degree candidates per year, and the number amounted to 60% in 2003. Most of the graduating students with Master’s degree are enrolled as Doctor’s degree candidates by the universities and institutions at home and abroad, such as Doctor Li Wenjie, who was studying in the USA, invented the super-micro battery---- the smallest battery in the world and published theses on Science Magazine, which has attracted worldwide attention. The college graduates, Wangjinye and Zhang Suojiang returning from abroad, heve become the young experts of CAS “one Hundred Talents Program”.
Since 1950s, under leadership of distinguished professors, such as Li Junfu and Lu Jinsuo, the college launches scientific research actively. The scientific research achievements in the fields of solution chemistry, calorimetry, electrochemistry, electroanalysis and coordination chemistry, have also attracted nation-wide attention and appeared in the book “50 Years of Chemistry in China “ which was compiled by the National famous Chemists in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Chemical Association, in which a series of the outstanding research achievements are listed.
In recent years, great progress has been made in the scientific research activities. Since 1995, the college has undertaken 106 research projects of the state level or provincial level, among which 11 came from the State Natural Science Fund, 2 came from the State New Medicine Fund, 1 came from the State Tackling key Technical Difficulties, 2 came from State Education Commission Fund for young excellent teachers, and 1 came from the Ministry of Education Fund for core teachers in higher college. 14 research projects have been awarded prizes by authoritative institutions at or above the level of the province. The number of articles included by SCI is increasing year by year. According to State Science and Technology Information Center Statistical data, the sequence list from 1996 to 2001 on the number of natural science papers published from Colleges and Departments of Chemistry of all the Chinese universities and included by the American SCI, the college was always before the 5th place, especially in the 2nd place in 1996.
In order to strengthen cultural exchanges with foreign countries, the college has established close inter-collegiate cooperation of research and academic exchanges with over 10 universities in USA, Britain, Japan, Canada and Denmark. The college has invited many experts and professors to give lectures and act as honorary or part-time professors, such as Professor L. Blurn from Puerto Rico University of USA, the academician R.K. Thomas form Oxford University of UK, Professor D. Steinborn from Halle University of Germany, and the academicians Wang Erkang form Changchun Applied Chemistry Research Institute of CAS, Hu Hongwen from Nanjing Univrstiy, Zhao Yufen form Tsinghua University and at the same time the academician of Research Institute of CAS, Dai Lixin form Shanghai Organic Chemistry Research Institute of CAS, and Shen Yunfen from Wuhan Aquatics Research Institute of CAS. At the same time, more than 20 teachers in the college have been the distinguished universities and colleges in USA, Britain, Germany, Japan and Hong Kong to develop cooperative research, which brings about a great advance in teaching and scientific research of the college.
